Call for Posters

AOAC INTERNATIONAL invites you to submit an abstract for Poster Presentation at the 2017 Annual Meeting. 

Poster Topic Categories


  • Analysis of Foodborne Contaminants and Residues 
    (Naturally present or produced DURING processing (e.g. heavy metals, PSP, acrylamide, 3-MCPD) but not something that is administered by man, such as pesticides or veterinary drugs)
  • Analysis of Non-Foodborne Contaminants and Residues 
    (Includes all externally added contaminants (e.g. pesticides and veterinary drugs) but NOT natural toxins like Mycotoxins or PSP)
  • Authenticity 
    (Methods to determine truthfulness of identity of ingredients and foods)
  • Botanicals and Dietary Supplements 
    (Methods or developments related to botanicals and dietary supplements)
  • Colorants and Dyes 
    (Color additives (both synthetic and those derived from natural sources) used in food and cosmetic products in the United States and internationally)
  • Detection and Measurement of Natural Toxins 
    (PSP, Mycotoxins)
  • Emerging Issues in Food Safety and Security 
    (Issues not older than 24 months related to food safety)
  • Environmental Analysis
    (Posters related to both chemical contaminants and microbiological issues with regard to the environment.  The environmental areas of interest should not be limited to just water or wastewater analysis, but include other areas of the environment such as soils and air quality)
  • Food Nutrition and Food Allergens
    (Nutritional methods, GI, Food Allergen methods and issues)
  • General Methods, Quality Assurance and Accreditation
    (Quality Assurance and Accreditation; and any methods that do NOT fit in ANY of the other categories)
  • Microbiological Methods 
    (Microbiological methods for food and the environment)
  • Performance Tested MethodsSM
    (Validated methods for programs requiring increased confidence and method reproducibility information)

Poster Abstract Submission Instructions


  1. Pre-Register for the Annual Meeting: At least one of the poster authors must pre-register for the AOAC Annual Meeting in order to gain access to the poster submission web site.

  2. Confirmation and Access for Abstract Submission:  Once you have registered, check your email for your pre-registration confirmation. Within the email confirmation, you will be granted the URL to submit your poster abstract online. 
  3. Log-In Procedures for the Poster Abstract Submission Site:  After accessing the Submission Site, you will be directed to log in as a returning user or if you are a new user, to create a new account.

Returning Users:

If you submitted a poster abstract to AOAC between 2011 - 2016 you may log in with the user name and password you created to establish your account. If you have forgotten either your user name or password, you may retrieve it on the submission site.
NOTE: The username/password for the submission site is NOT your AOAC account login/password.  The submission site uses separate login credentials.

New Users:
If you have not submitted a poster abstract to AOAC between 2011 - 2016 you must register as a new user. Click on “Create a New Account” and follow the directions on the site.

All abstracts must be submitted via the online submission site.

Poster Submission Guidelines


  • All abstracts must be submitted via the online submission site. Abstracts sent to AOAC via mail or email cannot be accepted.
  • Only complete Poster abstracts with all required information will be considered for publication and presentation at the Annual Meeting.
  • Paper titles or abstracts without complete contact information will not be accepted.
  • Changes will not be possible after the final submission deadline of July 27, 2017.

 General Guidelines to prepare your abstract for online submission:

  • Use only text. Do not use graphs, charts, diagrams, boxes, borders or tables.
  • Do not include references, credits or grant support.
  • Do not include keywords. AOAC does not publish a key words index in the Final Program.
  • All abstracts must use correct grammar and punctuation. Proofread carefully for formatting, spelling and grammar. Abstracts will be published exactly as submitted.
  • Abstracts dealing with commercial products or services must have a scientific emphasis and should not be submitted for promotion purposes.
  • Special Characters: In most cases, Greek letters and other special characters will transfer from your word processing software. The special character palette is available if needed. 
  • Character Limit: There is a limit of 1500 characters for the body text (including spaces) of your abstract submission.
Only complete Poster abstracts with all required information will be considered for publication and presentation at the Annual Meeting. Paper titles or abstracts without complete contact information will not be accepted. Changes will not be possible after the final submission deadline of July 27, 2017.

Pre-Registration Deadlines for Poster Authors

Preliminary Program

The Preliminary Program will be available online to the Association’s constituency, and provides an overview of the Annual Meeting and a preview of the technical program. Poster abstracts submitted and confirmed by June 2, 2017 will be listed in the Poster Presentation section of the Preliminary Program.

Final Program

The Final Program will be distributed to all Meeting registrants upon check-in at AOAC Registration booth in Atlanta, Georgia. It will include a full abstract listing and author index for all Poster Presentations at the Annual Meeting. The final deadline to submit a poster abstract for inclusion in the Poster Presentation section of the Final Program is July 27, 2017. 

Notice of Final Poster Acceptance

All Poster authors will be notified of their acceptance for presentation at the Annual Meeting and inclusion in the Final Program by August 15, 2017. A final poster listing, including assigned poster numbers and detailed presentation information, will also be made available by August 30, 2017. 

JAOAC Poster Publication

Poster Presenters are encouraged to submit full Journal papers, along with their posters, for consideration of publication in the Journal of AOAC INTERNATIONAL. These submissions will undergo Journal peer review, and if accepted, the papers will be published in the online Journal and in print, and provided open access. Authors who want their articles openly accessible to maximize their research impact typically pay $1,000 publication fee for the privilege of Journal open access. This offer is being made available to Poster Presenters free of charge, and with this special offer, the accepted articles will also be made available to the authors to distribute and post on their own website. For more information on this special offer to Poster Presenters, contact Jennifer Diatz, jdiatz@aoac.org, at the AOAC Publications Department. Submissions for the Journal must accompany the poster presentations.

Contest For First-Time Presenters

This Contest is to encourage active participation of attendees to showcase their analytical work in the relevant areas of fields of research that fit the scope of AOAC.

  • AOAC-TPC (Technical Programming Council) will appoint a panel of judges representing expertise from diverse areas of analytical communities of AOAC.
  • The posters will be evaluated on the basis of content, oral delivery, discussion with presenters (Q/A) and overall formatting during the author’s presentation time at the Meeting. Eligibility to participate will be limited to first-time poster presenters only.
  • The top five posters will be awarded plaques. The names of the winning presenters and first authors will be announced during the Annual Meeting at the AOAC Business Meeting on Wednesday, September 27.
  • Winners will be published in the 2017 November/December issue of Inside Laboratory Management (ILM).
  • In order to enter the contest, you must first register for the Annual Meeting. Once registered, you may submit a poster presentation through the online submission site. More details regarding the Contest are located on the submission site.
