This year marks the 100th year of publication of the Journal of AOAC INTERNATIONAL. One of the top 100 most influential publications in analytical sciences, the Journal’s scientific excellence is achieved and maintained by Section Editors of international stature in their respective subject areas, and by an Editorial Board that comprises eminent scientists from industry, regulatory agencies, and academia, and talented and dedicated staff.
“I am privileged to celebrate this momentous occasion,” writes Sarwar Gilani, AOAC Editorial Board chair, in the January/February 2017 issue of J. AOAC Int.
In a letter commemorating the Journal’s centennial, Gilani, who is retired from Health Canada, acknowledges “the exemplary scientific contributions of the Journal. . . . In addition to publishing peer-reviewed premier discoveries in basic and applied research in the analytical sciences, the Journal has been publishing Special Guest Editor manuscripts on important topics which are appropriate to the work of AOAC INTERNATIONAL’s stakeholders and clearly fall within the scope of the Journal. These Special Guest Editor sections now account for a quarter of the overall content of the Journal. Special Guest Editor sections are consistently among the most downloaded of all Journal manuscripts, and have helped raise the Journal’s Impact Factor.”
“In line with the evolution of AOAC INTERNATIONAL, and the inception of AOAC’s stakeholder process in 2011, the Journal has become one of the Association’s key tools in disseminating urgently needed methods to the analytical communities. Publication in the Journal of AOAC INTERNATIONAL is a tangible product resulting from AOAC’s standards development activities, and the Journal has a key role in providing accessibility, defensibility, and transparency to that process. In turn, the work of the Association has resulted in expanding the scope of the Journal, with new sections on dietary supplements, infant formula, foods, biothreat agents, and alternative methods.”
In addition, AOAC created an entirely new special section related to stakeholder output, showcasing Standard Method Performance Requirements (SMPRs®) developed through the AOAC stakeholder process. This new section also includes AOAC Official MethodsSM assessed by expert review panels (ERPs) and determined to acceptably meet those SMPRs. “With the addition of stakeholder output to the Journal (and more methods being published than ever), I believe the Journal has also become a more valuable resource for the analytical community worldwide,” emphasizes Gilani.
“Moreover, I see the plan in the near future to extend the scope of the Journal to include the context in which analytical methods and deliberations of AOAC’s stakeholders are used for industry and regulatory compliance and public health considerations. In addition to the publication of original peer-reviewed full research papers and Technical Communications, the Journal of AOAC INTERNATIONAL will be expanding on its primary research format in 2017 to include new format and types of papers, including Short Communications, Extended Abstracts, and Commentaries.”
“It is an exciting time at AOAC, with refined processes transforming the Journal,” concludes Gilani. “This leads to transparency and faster accessibility of the latest research, standards, and methods available to AOAC’s stakeholders–further increasing the importance and relevance of AOAC to the scientific community. The Journal is meeting the demands for faster publishing, while maintaining its high quality.”
