AOAC Approves Revisions to Official MethodSM 961.02;
Method Available Online
The AOAC Methods Committee on Antimicrobial Efficacy Testing approved editorial revisions to Official MethodSM 961.02 (Germicidal Spray Products as Disinfectants). The newly revised method is available to members on the Official Methods of Analysis (OMA) Online at http://eoma.aoac.org/. For information about becoming a member of AOAC, please contact customerservice@aoac.org.
Revision of Method 961.02 is part of a comprehensive effort, led by Stephen Tomasino, senior science advisor, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Pesticide Programs (EPA/OPP), to update and improve the test methods found in OMA Chapter 6 (Disinfectants). The editorial revisions aim to provide clarification, not to modify method procedures. Input from stakeholders, including those from the Consumer Specialty Products Association (CSPA), is valuable to the editorial review process and consensus-building effort.
In general, editorial revisions to Method 961.02 include clarification of certain test parameters, such as time and temperature of autoclaving, and of drainage and drying of carriers after spraying. Based on performance and commercial availability, a new sporulation medium, Sabouraud Dextrose Agar, is included as an alternative to glucose agar.
Additional revisions to the germicidal spray products method include reduction of cross-references to other methods found in the OMA, notes and safety statements, consistency with the AOAC use-dilution and fungicidal activity of disinfectants method, and a section on additional guidance, among others.
