SMPRs Available in OMA

Standard method performance requirements (SMPRs) are available—for the first time—in the Official Methods of Analysis (OMA 19th Ed.) and OMA Online (http://www.eoma.aoac.org/). The online product offers users quick and easy access to the most up-to-date SMPRs, which are fully searchable.

The process by which SMPRs are developed—one that ensures transparency, openness, balance of interest, due process, appeals, and voluntary consensus--provides credibility, defensibility, and acceptability of the end product. By publishing the SMPRs, AOAC is capturing and providing transparency of its third-party consensus-building activities.

Through the AOAC stakeholder process, the majority of new methods adopted are based on evaluation against SMPRs developed and approved by stakeholder panels. As of date, AOAC stakeholder panels have reached voluntary consensus and adopted 29 SMPRs in the areas of infant formula, food, biological threat agent detection, endocrine disruptors, and marine and freshwater foods:

*Nutrients in infant formula and adult/pediatric nutritional formula

*Antioxidants, flavanols, ingredients, and heavy metals in foods

*Veterinary drug residues in animal tissues

*Drug residues in shrimp, catfish, tilapia, and salmon

*PCR-based assays for Bacillus anthracis, Yersinia pestis, and Francisella tularensis

*Antibody-based hand-held assays for ricin and B. anthracis

*Estrone in freshwater

SMPRs are a valuable solution to address critical needs through consensus, with the ultimate goal of translating them into AOAC Official MethodsSM. Once SMPRs are adopted by stakeholders, any method can be used as long as it meets the established performance requirements.
