Revisions to Germicidal and Detergent Sanitizing Action Test Approved;
Method Available OnlineIn October 2011, the AOAC Methods Committee on Antimicrobial Efficacy Testing approved editorial/procedural revisions to AOAC Official
MethodSM 960.09 (Germicidal and Detergent Sanitizing Action of Disinfectants). The newly Revised First Action 2011 method is available on the
Official Methods of Analysis (OMA) Online at http://www.eoma.aoac.org/.
Led by Stephen Tomasino, senior science advisor, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Pesticide Programs (EPA/OPP), revision of Method
960.09 was prioritized as part of a comprehensive effort to update and improve the test methods found in OMA Chapter 6 (Disinfectants). The revisions aim to provide clarification to the procedures. In revising Method
960.09, input from stakeholders, including those from the Consumer Specialty Products Association (CSPA), was valuable to the editorial review process and consensus-building effort.
What’s New?
Mainly, revisions include clarification on preparation of culture media, incorporation of a commercially available standard for the preparation of hard water as diluent for disinfectants, and use of a digital titrator to determine water hardness. In addition, a new section on
Additional Guidance is available, which serves as procedural guidance to augment the germicidal and detergent sanitizing test and not considered a component of the official test. The section includes information on neutralization confirmation control and calculations—additions that are consistent with other revisions to Chapter 6 (use-dilution methods, germicidal spray products, and tuberculocidal activity of disinfectants tests).
Other revisions to the method include:
*Notes and safety statements, including biosafety practices, safe handling of microorganisms and disinfectants, and information on reagent-grade water
*References to Official MethodsSM 955.14, 955.15, and
964.02 (the Use-Dilution Methods) and ASTM International Method E 1054–Standard Test Methods for Evaluation of Inactivators of Antimicrobial Agents
*Reduction of cross-references to other methods found in the OMA
