CoQ10 Method Adopted as Official First Action

AOAC adopted a new method for the determination of coenzyme Q10 in raw material and dietary supplements as Official First Action. The method “Determination of Coenzyme Q10 Content in Raw Materials and Dietary Supplements by HPLC-UV” was adopted on May 23, 2008, as Official MethodSM 2008.07.

CoQ10 is present in the mitochondria of most human cells, except red blood cells, and is responsible for the production of the body’s own energy. A collaborative study was performed by 10 laboratories, using an HPLC-UV method for testing the presence of CoQ10 in softgels, gelatin capsules, and chewable wafers against the standard raw material and other controls. An Expert Review Panel selected the method, which was followed by a single-laboratory validation, then the collaborative study. The study was part of an NIH-FDA contract with AOAC INTERNATIONAL to validate methods for high-priority ingredients found in dietary supplements.

Full coverage of the CoQ10 method and collaborative study is scheduled in the July/August issue of the Journal of AOAC INTERNATIONAL, with additional coverage in the July/August issue of Inside Laboratory Management.
