Stan Bacler, senior policy advisor with Health Canada’s Health Products and Food Branch and formerly national manager of the food, feed, and fertilizer chemistry laboratory program at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), has assumed the role of president-elect of the AOAC Board of Directors. Barry Titlow, who was serving in this position, passed away on March 1, 2011 (see March/April 2011 issue of ILM). Bacler has served on the AOAC Board since 2007, and will assume the presidency during this year’s Annual Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.
“It was a privilege to have served on the AOAC Board with Barry, and I am honored to step in for him as president-elect,” Bacler said. “These are exciting times at AOAC, and I look forward to the great opportunities I see for our Association.”
Bacler recently returned to Health Canada after working with CFIA since its inception in 1997, where he served as a national manager since 2001. In that capacity, he was responsible for the management and coordination of all chemistry testing for CFIA food, feed, and fertilizer programs in a national network of nine laboratories across Canada. Areas of testing include pesticides, veterinary drug residues, heavy metals, PCB/dioxins/furans, PAH, mycotoxins, marine toxins, additives, composition, nutrition, allergens, food authenticity, and other disciplines related to food, feed, and fertilizer products regulated by CFIA.
Prior to joining CFIA, he held positions at Canada Packers, Health Canada, and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. He has worked extensively in analytical chemistry, with over 30 years experience.
A member since 2006, Bacler is highly active at AOAC. In addition to the Board of Directors, he serves as chair of the Stakeholder Panel on Marine and Freshwater Foods; member of the Stakeholder Panel on Infant Formula and Adult Nutritionals; and member of the Presidential Task Force on Food Allergens. He established CFIA as an AOAC Organizational Affiliate in 2006.
In addition to AOAC, Bacler is the Head of Delegation to the Codex Committee for Methods of Analysis and Sampling (CCMAS) for Canada. He also has served as the Canadian representative to the International Olive Oil Council chemistry committee; is currently a technical advisor for Codex Committees on Fats and Oils, Nutrition, Additives, Contaminants; and is the chair of the CFIA Health Canada Allergen Methods Committee. He also represented CFIA chemistry laboratories on the Canadian CBRN Research and Technology Initiative (CRTI).
Bacler is a graduate of the University of Winnipeg, where he studied chemistry and biochemistry.
