The deadline of April 13 for abstract submission is rapidly approaching for the following marine toxin and "risk and the community" (assessment, communication and management) symposia. Pacifichem 2005 is in Honolulu, Hawaii Dec 15-20, 2005.

Under Analytical Chemistry, Pacifichem 2005:

"Marine Toxins: Structure, Toxicology and Detection"

Organizing Committee:

James Hungerford | Richard Lewis | Takeshi Yasumoto | Robert Dickey

Abstract

The primary focus of the marine toxin symposium will be to address the structure, toxicology, and detection of marine toxins. For the purpose of synthesizing, identifying, detecting, and assessing the risk of marine toxins, modern synthetic and instrumental techniques are applied together with biological and biochemical determinations of activity. This symposium will bring together speakers in multiple disciplines such as chemistry, biology, biochemistry, molecular biology and toxicology to discuss new and existing approaches to these challenges. Organizers from the Pacific Rim will bring together expert speakers from a diversity of various disciplines and cultures.

And under Chemistry and the Community, Pacifichem 2005:

"Chemistry, Toxins, Food Safety, and the Public: Education, Outreach, and Medical Aspects"

(This symposium could also be subtitled: Risk Assessment, Communication and Management)

Organizers:

James Hungerford | Purnendu Vasavada | Fumiko Kasuga | John Coventry | Patrick Holland

Abstract

The general public is our most important audience in our efforts to communicate important scientific issues on food safety. The topic areas are diverse, from the risks and benefits of various food related technologies to the dangers posed by synthetic and natural toxins, microbial toxins, and even the potential for intentional contamination of food. This symposium will bring together a diverse group to share their strategies and experiences. Issues of special interest to Pacific Rim communities, including marine toxins and their impact on island cultures as well as medical aspects, will also be addressed.

Please note that Pacifichem 2005 also includes hundreds of other symposia including others addressing Marine Natural Products (Organic Chem, Pacifichem 2005) and Marine Microbial Products: An Emerging Source for Drug Discovery (Biological Chem, Pacifichem 2005).
