Announcement and invitation to from Pacific NW AOAC Section Chair Carlos Abeyta
You are cordially invited to attend the 2005 summer meeting of the Pacific Northwest Section of AOAC INTERNATIONAL, to be held on the campus of the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington on June 23-24.
AOAC INTERNATIONAL stands for the Association of Analytical Communities. AOAC is committed to being a proactive, worldwide provider and facilitator in the development, use and harmonization of validated analytical methods and laboratory quality assurance programs and services. AOAC also serves as the primary resource for timely knowledge exchange, networking, and high-quality laboratory information for scientists. We would like to promote awareness of AOAC and to encourage people to attend our June workshop and training. Please feel free to peruse our website www.aoacpacnw.com. We are in the process of updating the website. The training and workshops have not yet been posted for the year.
The theme for this coming AOACI Pacific Northwest Section Summer Meeting is "WHAT ARE OUR BEST DEFENSES? ENVIRONMENTAL AND INTENTIONAL CONTAMINATION". The theme will encompass topics such as: toxins (natural, environmental, and intentional) in food and water; detection of Norovirus (Norwalk virus) in wastewater and shellfish; sanitary quality of aquaculture practices; epidemiological contributions from inspections of cruise ships and many more. We are featuring the participation of scientists from the AOAC Task Force on Marine and Freshwater Toxins. The Task Force is an international group of experts on marine and freshwater toxins, and stakeholders who have a strong and practical interest in the development and validation of methods for detection of marine toxins. From the Task Force we are pleased to have marine toxin experts such as Dr. Benjamin Suarez-Isla, University of Chile; Dr. Vera Trainer from the NOAA Northwest Fisheries Science Center, Seattle, WA; and Dr. Ana Gago-Martinez, University of Vigo, Spain to participate as our keynote speakers. Also the Task Force will host a workshop on detection of marine toxins. Dr. Bill Burkhardt, FDA Dauphin Island will provide a keynote and training in the area of detection of Norwalk virus and the development of Good Aquaculture Practices for shrimp farms around the world.
Changing gears, the Northwest is noted for resident population of whales in our waters. Since we are focusing on the environment we can't forget the living creatures from the sea. We are also pleased to have Dr. Birgit Krieite, Executive Director of the ORCA Relief Alliances Program, for our banquet keynote speaker to present her research in Bioenergetic Changes and Contaminants in Whale Populations.
We have kept the same format as previous meetings with Chemistry/Microbiology workshops held on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning and afternoon. These workshops and training sessions give Pacific Northwest scientists an opportunity to share their knowledge, expertise and update crucial skills and meet other scientist working in your field.
I hope you can attend our summer meeting. If you have any questions regarding AOAC please don't hesitate contacting me.
