Peer-Verified Method Program

10 Easy Steps To Validate A PVM Method

STEP 1: Develop in-house performance data
Method author is required to develop the initial method data according to AOAC criteria, see Checklist for Method Development, Characterization, and Ruggedness Testing. The author is encouraged to incorporate appropriate safety information, see Safety Checklist for Methods.

STEP 2: Author writes method in ISO format
The method author writes the method in the step-by-step format specified by AOAC that follows the expected flow of laboratory operations, see Peer-Verified Methods format.

STEP 3: Author selects independent laboratory and arranges for testing according to protocol
The method author develops the design or protocol for second laboratory testing of method performance according to AOAC criteria, see Checklist for Independent Laboratory Protocol. He or she is encouraged to discuss the method or seek advice from the appropriate Technical Referee. The AOAC Office can identify an appropriate expert if this is not known to the author. The method author follows the policy for selecting an independent peer laboratory, see Independent laboratory requirement , and recruits the laboratory to test the method according to the written protocol.

STEP 4: Independent laboratory conducts method performance testing
The author prepares any necessary collaborating samples and sends the method, samples, protocol, and Independent Laboratory Report Form to the second laboratory.

STEP 5: Independent laboratory submits results to author

STEP 6: Author analyzes all data and sends in-house performance data, testing protocol, send second laboratory testing data, and proposed method to AOAC

STEP 7: AOAC sends all method information to Technical Referee
The Referee selects at least 2 experts to provide a written technical review, Technical Referee/Reviewers Review Form for Peer-Verified Methods, and sends the submitted information. Reviewers are asked to return their reviews to the Referee within 3 weeks.

STEP 8: On the basis of the technical reviews, Technical Referee grants acceptance of method as an AOAC Peer-Verified Method.

STEP 9: Official Approval letter is sent to the method author.

STEP 10: Method is published in JAOAC.
