Methods for the Quantitation of Curcuminoids


March 6, 2017 [Rockville, Maryland] - AOAC INTERNATIONAL invites method authors and developers to submit relevant methods that may meet the AOAC Standard Method Performance Requirements® (SMPR®) for the quantitative measurement of curcuminoids in ingredients and dietary supplements (SMPR 2016.003). Submitted methods will be reviewed by an AOAC Expert Review Panel for consideration of AOAC First Action Official MethodsSM status. Methods adopted as AOAC First Action Official MethodsSM by the Expert Review Panel will be published by AOAC INTERNATIONAL.

OBJECTIVE:
The objective of this call for methods is to collect relevant methods that may meet one or more of the aforementioned SMPRs, all of which have been approved by the AOAC Stakeholder Panel on Dietary Supplements (SPDS). All submitted methods will be subjected to evaluation by an AOAC Expert Review Panel, who will review them for potential AOAC First Action Official MethodsSM status. Any resulting approved/adopted Official Methods of Analysis may be used as a reference method. Acceptable methods must demonstrate that they meet one or more of the aforementioned SMPRs, therefore, being reliable and reproducible when used by trained analysts in accredited laboratories.

METHOD ELIGIBILITY:
Methods must be able to do separate and quantify each individual curcuminoids (curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethyoxycircumin) in turmeric [Curcuma longa Linn.] dietary supplements and dietary supplement finished products containing turmeric, alone or in combination with other dietary ingredients, as per AOAC 2016.003. For the purpose of this Call-for-Methods, the curcumins are defined as follows:

  • Curcumin.—IUPAC name: (1E,6E)-1,7-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1,6-heptadiene-3,5-dione. CAS No. 458-37-7.

  • Demethoxycurcumin .—IUPAC name: (1E,6E)-1-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-7-(4-hydroxyphenyl)hepta-1,6-diene-3,5-dione. CAS No. 24939-17-1.

  • Bisdemethoxycurcumin .—IUPAC name: (1E,6E)-1,7-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)hepta-1,6-diene-3,5-dione. CAS No. 24939-16-0.

Any analytical technique(s) that measures the analytes of interest and meets the method performance requirements in AOAC 2016.003 will be considered.

Interested method authors or developers should provide a copy of their proposed method, as well as any available data characterizing the analytical performance and scientific validity of the method in AOAC format. Ideal method submissions should include a well written method procedure and be accompanied by data or information supporting the method’s applicability and demonstrating the method’s ability to meet the criteria of the AOAC standard method performance requirements.
