AOAC INTERNATIONAL (AOAC) invites method developers to submit methods for consideration and possible evaluation through the AOAC Official MethodsSMprogram. Prospective methods must be able to determine Carotenoids (alpha-carotene & lutein), Fluoride, GOS, Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMO – 2’-FL & LNnT), and Lactoferrin in all forms of infant, adult, and/or pediatric formula (powders, ready-to-feed liquids, and liquid concentrates) according to each nutrient’s Standard Method Performance Requirements (SMPRs®).

Method Eligibility

Infant formula is defined as breast-milk substitute specially manufactured to satisfy, by itself, the nutritional requirements of infants during the first months of life up to the introduction of appropriate complementary feeding. Adult/pediatric formula is defined as nutritionally complete, specially formulated foods, consumed in liquid form, which may constitute the sole source of nourishment. Acceptable methods must be compatible with formula made from any combination of milk, soy, rice, whey, hydrolyzed protein, starch, and amino acids, with and without intact protein; and with test samples in ready-to-feed liquid, concentrated liquid and powdered form.

The ultimate objective of this project is to select, evaluate, and validate reference methods that can be used for dispute resolution. Acceptable methods must be reliable and reproducible when used by trained analysts in accredited laboratories.

Any analytical technique that meets the method performance requirements is acceptable.

Interested method developers must provide their method and data demonstrating that the method can meet the performance requirements.

AOAC Method Submission Requirements and Deadlines

Method authors may submit methods for review to the Official Methods of Analysis℠ (OMA) program. Method authors with rapid commercial and proprietary methods may opt to submit methods for review to the Performance Tested Methods℠ (PTM) program only; to the OMA program only; or to the PTM program first and then submit to the OMA program, thereafter.

Official Methods of Analysis (OMA) Program

  • Candidate methods must be submitted in AOAC OMA and the data submitted as a manuscript in Journal of AOAC INTERNATIONAL. format. No exceptions. Please see the Guidelines for Method Authors.
  • Full single laboratory validation required followed by a reproducibility study.
  • Application fees apply for rapid commercial proprietary methods only.
  • Methods and manuscripts must be submitted by specified deadlines.
