AOAC INTERNATIONAL (AOAC) invites method developers to submit methods for consideration and possible evaluation through the AOAC Official MethodsSM program. Prospective methods must utilize chromatographic separation with mass spectrometric detection and be able to quantify ethylene oxide and its marker residue 2-chloroethanol (analyzed individually and reported individually and as a sum expressed as ethylene oxide) in oil seeds and nuts, grains, pulses, dried herbs, spices and extracts thereof, food additives, dietary supplement products and ingredients, dried fruits, essential oils, coffee, cocoa and composite foods, meeting the recently approved Standard Method Performance Requirements AOAC SMPR®2024.005.

Method Eligibility

An eligible method must meet the various parameters outline in the SMPR® and must be reliable, repeatable, and ultimately reproducible when used by trained analysts in accredited laboratories. The intent of the method is to establish a reference method for compliance with relevant regulatory agencies.

Reference the SMPR® for definitions and the proposed method validation requirements for parameters such as analytical range, limit of quantification, recovery, repeatability and reproducibility, system suitability, and reference materials. Any chromatographic separation with mass spectrometry-based analytical technique that meets the method performance requirements is acceptable.

Interested method developers must provide their method and accompanying data demonstrating that the method can meet the performance requirements.

AOAC Method Submission Requirements and Deadlines

Method authors may submit methods for review to the Official Methods of AnalysisSM (OMA) program.

  • Candidate methods must be submitted in AOAC OMA format, and the data submitted as a manuscript in Journal of AOAC INTERNATIONAL format, NO EXCEPTIONS. Method safety must also be included for submission.
  • If you need assistance with putting your method or data into format AOAC provides a formatting consulting service for a fee.
  • For first action methods, full single laboratory validation is required followed by a reproducible study for final action consideration.
  • Applications fees are applicable to rapid commercial proprietary methods only.

Methods and manuscripts must be submitted by 03/28/25.
