Artificial intelligence (AI) is a wide-ranging branch of computer science concerned with building smart machines capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. Machine learning is a method of data analysis that automates analytical model building. It is a branch of artificial intelligence based on the idea that systems can learn from data, identify patterns, and make decisions with minimal human intervention. AI and machine learning are now applied to search engines like Google and services like Amazon, and method developers are starting to incorporate AI into analytical methods. Most notably, several methods use AI for PCR methods to detect SARS-CoV-2 viruses. Method developers are also starting to incorporate AI into food pathogen methods. This session explores what AI methods are, and how AOAC will evaluate these methods.
