Dr. Joe Boison holds a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada after having earned a B.Sc. (Hons) and a M.Sc. (Physical Chemistry) from the University of Ghana, West Africa.
In early 2018, he retired after 31 years of service with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), where he had devoted his research on using mass spectrometric/separation techniques to develop and validate sensitive methods for the detection and confirmation of veterinary drug residues and chemical contaminants in fresh slaughter meats and processed foods to support regulatory and compliance actions. He was appointed Acting Laboratory Director of the CFIA Saskatoon Laboratory in 2011.
Dr. Boison holds an Adjunct Professor of Chemistry Faculty position in the Chemistry Department of the University of Saskatchewan, and an Adjunct Professor of Veterinary Biomedical Sciences Faculty position at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan.
He was appointed a Consulting Fellow World Innovation Foundation in 2003, received the CFIA President’s Award for Scientific Innovation and Leadership Excellence in 2011, was appointed a Fellow of AOAC INTERNATIONAL in 2012, and was awarded AOAC’s most prestigious award for lifetime scientific excellence, the Harvey Wiley Award, in 2015. He has over 95 publications in peer reviewed journals.
Dr. Boison has served as the subject matter expert for the Canadian Delegation to the Codex Committee on Residues of Veterinary Drugs in Foods (CCRVDF) since 2002, a member of the FAO/WHO Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) since 2007, and was a WHO Consultant to the Middle East. He is currently a scientific editor for the Journal of AOAC INTERNATIONAL and has chaired several AOAC Expert Review Panels and strategic Stakeholder Panel and Working Group initiatives at AOAC. He is the Section Editor for Drug Formulations and Clinical Applications and Section Editor for Food Contaminants for the Journal of AOAC INTERNATIONAL. He served as Chair of the Board of Directors of the AOAC Research Institute and is currently the Past Chair of the Official Methods Board (OMB) and the Working Group Chair for AOAC’s Food Fraud and Food Authenticity Targeted Testing Program Initiative.
He is currently the Director of EJ Consultancy, an independent consulting firm, providing analytical solutions to government and private Laboratories on separations and mass spectrometric analysis as well as providing lead auditor services for laboratories and facilities operating under ISO/IEC 17025:2017.
