He has a master’s in fisheries science and a Ph.D. in Fishery Microbiology.  He teaches microbiology, molecular biology, biotechnology and research methodology courses to post-graduate students, handling multiple research projects and guiding master’s and Ph.D. research. He has over 25 years of experience, with wide post-doctoral research experience in India, Japan, Germany, and the USA.

At ICAR-CIFE, Mumbai, Sanath Kumar’s research is focused on seafood-borne pathogens such as vibrios, non-typhoidal Salmonella, E. coli pathotypes, MRSA and Listeria monocytogenes, their virulence mechanisms, physiology and genetics of pathogen persistence in food, antimicrobial resistance, toxins, membrane transporters of sugar and efflux pump groups, metagenome analysis, biocontrol of pathogens in fishery products and microbe-mediated fish waste management. His group is actively involved in developing methods for rapidly detecting seafood-borne pathogens. His research emphasizes the mitigation of pathogen contamination and antimicrobial resistance in tropical seafood, aligning with the one health concept.  He has published over 100 research papers in peer-reviewed international journals, several book chapters, and popular articles.
