AOAC is seeking volunteer OMA Editors to support the clarity and scientific integrity of the Official Methods of Analysis Compendium.
ABOUT THE ROLE
OMA Editors are AOAC INTERNATIONAL volunteers who partner with the Official Methods Board (OMB) and AOAC staff to help assure and ensure the scientific integrity, rigor, clarity, and consistency of the Official Methods of Analysis of AOAC INTERNATIONALSM Compendium. Editors serve in a recommending and advisory capacity—offering editorial, structural, and scientific guidance on ongoing Compendium maintenance—while final decisions remain with the OMB.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Monitor and review OMA methods across the Compendium lifecycle, including initial review, periodic review, and repeal recommendations
- Recommend editorial, structural, and scientific improvements that support method clarity, consistency, and modernization
- Advise on alignment of method structure, terminology, formatting, metadata standards, and front matter across scientific domains
- Serve as an advisory resource to the OMB, AOAC staff, Method Committees, ERPs, CMVGC, and CMWGs on editorial and structural issues
- Support continuous improvement by proposing refinements to modernization rules, templates, training materials, and editorial guidance
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
- Scientific method domain expertise in one or more OMA subject-matter areas
- Strong editorial judgment with the ability to evaluate scientific rigor, clarity, and consistency
- Familiarity with method validation expectations and method formatting or modernization rules
- Collaborative advisory approach across committees, domains, and volunteer groups
- AOAC INTERNATIONAL membership in good standing
- Availability of approximately 4 hours per week
OMA Editors are an appointed group of volunteer advisors—not a standing committee—sized to support scientific domain coverage across the Compendium. One Editor is selected from among the Editors to serve as liaison to the OMB and carry forward group recommendations.
- Membership model: 3–5 appointed Editors, with roster expansion as new domains emerge
- Representation: Each Editor represents one or more scientific domain clusters
- Liaison role: One Editor serves a two-year term as liaison to the OMB
- Working quorum: Two-thirds of Editors present for deliberations and consensus recommendations
- Service: Volunteer, uncompensated; follows AOAC policies on conflict of interest, confidentiality, and conduct
