Comment period deadline: October 30, 2026
AOAC INTERNATIONAL (AOAC) is issuing a notice of revision for an editorial correction to AOAC SMPR® 2020.001, Standard Method Performance Requirements for Determination of Heavy Metals in a Variety of Cannabis and Cannabis-Derived Products, and AOAC SMPR® 2023.005, Standard Method Performance Requirements for Determination of Heavy Metals in Cannabis-Containing Beverages.
Both SMPRs list chromium as a potential optional analyte and currently associate it with CAS No. 18540-29-9, which identifies hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)]. Neither SMPR limits the analyte to hexavalent chromium or otherwise describes chromium speciation. The CAS number has been corrected to 7440-47-3, the CAS number for elemental chromium, so that the identifier is consistent with the analyte description and the intended total-element measurement context.
This correction is limited to the chromium CAS number. It does not change the intended use, matrices, analytical techniques, performance requirements, or status of either SMPR.
The notice of revision for the standards initiates a brief comment period with the revised standards with the tracked changes. Interested parties may submit comments during the 10-business-day posting period using the Comment Form provided with this notice. If no comments of opposition are received, the corrections will take effect immediately upon the close of the posting period, and the published records for AOAC SMPR® 2020.001 and AOAC SMPR® 2023.005 will identify chromium using CAS No. 7440-47-3.
The deadline for comments is Friday, October 30, 2026. Comments may be submitted by accessing the Comment Form.
