Donald L. Gilliland, PhD, has over 32 years of experience as analytical chemist much of it working in the infant formula industry. His experience includes nutrient method development and validation with an additional focus on the study and characterization of sample matrix impact on reference methods. He has worked globally with both industry and governmental laboratories providing method training and guidance toward developing laboratory proficiency.
Don has been active in AOAC INTERNATIONAL since 2008. He has been involved with the Stakeholder Panel on Infant Formula and Adult Nutritionals (SPIFAN) since its formal launch in 2011 including as a member of the SPIFAN Nutrient Methods Expert Review Panel (ERP), chair of the SPIFAN Vitamin D Working Group, and co-chair of the AOAC Infant Formula Proficiency Testing Program Advisory Task Force. Additionally, he served as a member of the AOAC Official Methods Board (2015-2021) and was selected to the Executive Committee of the Technical Division on Reference Materials (TDRM) in 2020.
Don was selected as a Fellow of AOAC INTERNATIONAL in 2019.
Don earned a Bachelor of Science degree (Chemistry, ACS) from Muskingum College and a PhD in Analytical Chemistry from Purdue University. Don is currently an Independent Contractor and is working with the AOAC Research Institute as a Technical Consultant.
